The Golf Royal Lytham is a links course with two strange aspects - it is a links course but there is no sea in view and the course opens with a par three. At par 71with its 200 bunkers, this course requires your full concentration! The layout of the course has remained faithful to the original created by the clubs first professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes where made in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, the pre-eminent course designer of the time to make recommendations for improvement. Over the next four years he repositioned some of the greens and tees added numerous bunkers and lengthened the course. It remains in that format today. Venue for 10 Open Championships, with the earliest winner here being Bobby Jones in 1926 and the most recent David Duval in 2001, the club is hosting the Weetabix Ladies Open next year and Amateur Championship in 2007. It is also due once again to host The Open Championship - date TBA. |
