The Club

The vision began over 75 years ago with Walter George Tarrant, the son of a Portsmouth policeman, who bought 200 acres of the Wentworth estate including the late 18th century gothic-style country house, originally built for the brother-in-law of the future Duke of Wellington.

Whenever visitors from afar find themselves in the vicinity of Virginia Water, their clubs in the boot of their car, the one course they all want to play is the West at Wentworth, otherwise known as the Burma Road. It is a course with which they are already in a sense familiar or even though they may never have set foot on it, they will have seen it scores of times on television. Since 1964 when Mark McCormack came up with the idea of having a World Match Play Championship in the Autumn, the West course has annually been on television with big audiences glued to their screens every time. Hardly a year passes without some drama.

A rhododendron lined drive leads to the famous castellated Clubhouse which was extensively redeveloped in 1993. The spacious, elegant interior reflects the traditions of the club. Outstanding golfers' facilities encompass a spiked complex with caddie master, bag drop, splendid locker rooms and Professional's shop. The Dining Room, noted for fine English food and offering both brasserie-style or formal dining and the oak panelled Burma Bar overlook the 18th green of the East and the lake, while the Club Lounge with an open fire and comfortable sofas is an ideal place to relax.

A mere youngster in golfing terms, Wentworth has played an important part in British golf history. In 1926, the Club hosted the fore-runner to the Ryder Cup; the inaugural Curtis Cup in 1932 and the Canada Cup in 1956 drew over 30,000 spectators, an unprecedented figure for those times. More recently the West course has become familiar to millions of television viewers worldwide through the annual PGA and World Match Play Championships.
